There was a startling spike in the number of middle school and high school students who reported vaping in 2018 compared to 2017, according to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a project funded by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That brings the total number of kids currently vaping to more than 3.6 million. Many of them are addicted to nicotine.

While almost a third of high school students admitted to recently vaping nicotine-containing products, nearly a quarter of them said they have actively tried to quit but couldn’t. Vape manufacturers like JUUL are addicting an entirely new generation to nicotine, public health officials warn.

The long-term effects of vaping are still unknown but the short- and long-term implications of nicotine addiction are well documented. How do you know if you or someone you know is addicted to nicotine in vapes? Your mind and body will tell you.

Emotional signs of vape addiction:

  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Physical signs of vape addiction:

  • Dry mouth: e-liquids often contain the chemical additive propylene glycol, which can cause dry mouth. Over time, this can lead to bad breath, mouth sores and tooth decay.
  • Nosebleeds: Another side effect of propylene glycol found in e-liquids is that it can dehydrate the skin in the nostrils making you vulnerable to nosebleeds.
  • Headaches & dizziness: Mild headache and dizziness are common side effects to vaping. They can also emerge as the first symptoms after quitting vaping.
  • Coughing: Vaping damages the cilia in the lungs, which makes you cough.
